چکیده
A study of tooth size was carried out on medieval skeletal material from Aebelholt and Naestved in Denmark. Measurements of all suitable permanent teeth were made in both mesiodistal and buccolingual dimensions with a sliding caliper with vernier reading to 0.1 mm. The material was divided according to sex and place of excavation; statistical preparation of the data provided mean values and standard deviations of tooth dimensions for each group separately. The significance of observed differences was assessed by the t test. The aims of this investigation were to examine sex differences in the teeth of medieval Danes from Aebelholt and Naestved; to examine differences between these population groups; to compare the results obtained for medieval Danes with data previously published for other prehistoric, early historic, and modern populations.

Odontometric sex estimation in humans using measurements on permanent canines. A comparison of an early Neolithic and an early medieval assemblage from Germany.
SUMMARY This study analyzed whether cervical canine dimensions measured at the enamel-cement junction can provide a basis for sex estimation in human skeletal remains and whether discriminant functions developed for one assemblage can be successfully applied also to others. Cervical canine dimensions were recorded for an Early Neolithic (Linear Pottery Culture) and an early medieval skeletal as...
متن کاملLow bone mineral density in the femoral neck of medieval women: a result of multiparity?
An archaeological investigation of a medieval cemetery gave us the opportunity to investigate 49 Danish skeletons dating from 1000 to 1250 A.D. and to compare them with 298 contemporary Danes (aged 19-79 years) and assess the millennial trend in bone mineral density (BMD) in populations considered genetically closely related. BMD and bone mineral apparent density (BMAD) of the femoral neck were...

متن کاملGenetic Diversity among Ancient Nordic Populations
Using established criteria for work with fossil DNA we have analysed mitochondrial DNA from 92 individuals from 18 locations in Denmark ranging in time from the Mesolithic to the Medieval Age. Unequivocal assignment of mtDNA haplotypes was possible for 56 of the ancient individuals; however, the success rate varied substantially between sites; the highest rates were obtained with untouched, fre...
